Before addressing Hodge's (Januar/2003) concerns, it is necessary to briefly examine the history of our profession's values in this country. This is done to support the idea that social workers' values as a whole have fluctuated between siding with oppressed and marginalized populations and working class people and serving as enforcers of the status quo. Furthermore, this idea is concomitant with the concept that social workers are not inherently leftists or rightists. Rather their values historically reflect the status of the social conflicts in our society. Therefore, any analysis of social workers' values cannot be divorced from the societal conditions at the historical moment in question. Social Classes
